Rangers History
CLUB HONOURS

The Blue half of Glasgow have dominated Scottish soccer along with their Glaswegian counterparts and great rivals Celtic since the very beginning of the Scottish Premier league or as it was known as back the old Scottish First Division. Whenever the two play the game is referred to as the ‘Old Firm Derby’

Playing their home games at the 50,411 capacity Ibrox Park Rangers were founded back in 1873. The club has traditionally been identified with the Protestant community of Glasgow, while their cross-town rivals Celtic were supported more by the Catholic community.

From their very first season in the league this club has enjoyed success sharing the title with Dumbarton at the very first attempt in 1890. Rangers experienced continued success in the early 1900’s under then manager William Wilton and his right hand man Bill Struth winning the title no less than seven times between 1900-1918.

After Wiltons’ tragic death in 1920, Struth continued on to become Rangers longest serving manager and a legend at Ibrox holding the post for a mere 34 years, bringing the championship to Ibrox no less than 18 times with 10 Scottish Cup wins to add to his Resume.

Their first and only taste of European success came under Willie Waddell back in1969 when his charges lifted the European Cup Winners Cup.

Jock Wallace managed the team for two spells the first being the more successful where he managed to break the dominance of his cross-town rivals by winning the Scottish First Division Championship for the last time in 1975  before the league changed it’s name to the Scottish Premier League the following season, leading a breakaway group of 10 teams to start a new league.

Graeme Souness, Brian Laudrup, Paul Gascoigne and Ally McCoist are some of the more famed names to pull on the blue Jersey.

Had a fairytail ride to the UEFA Cup final in 2008 and stood a chance of winning four trophies in the same season but the toll of playing eight games in 21 days was too much for a team both weary and injury ridden.
