Originally a track and field team
the soccer team was formed in 1901 and joined league competition
in 1912.
This team play there home games
at the Stadio Olympico stadium in the capital city of Rome which
they share with Roma. The 'Rome Derby' as it is known to everyone
connected to Italian football is always a passionately contested
fixture.
Always a threat both locally and
internationally even though they have only been Italian champions
twice. It could so easily have been three but for losing out
on the last day of the season to perennial favourites Juventusand
at one time had a reputation of being a very physical side to
play against.
Nevertheless many a great player
has donned the light blue of Lazio including the likes of Pavel
Nedved, Christian Vieri, Jaap Stam, Paul Gascoigne and the very
fiery Paulo Dicanio in his twighlight years.
One of three teams that were relegated
to Seria B after being found guilty for their part in the match
fixing scandal that shocked Italy and the soccerworld in 2006.
However that relegation was shortlived and their status was
re-instated in the Seria A but they still had to give up their
place in the UEFA Cup.
After further appeal they even
had there point reduction cut. This is the second time that
the Lazio team has been caught in a scandal. Back in 1980 they
were relegated because of a betting scandal.
