The Catalan Giants or sometimes
known as Just Barca, hail from Catalonia, Spain. They were founded
in 1899 bya group of twelve people led by Joan Gamper.
They play their homes games at
the impressive Nou Camp Stadium which seats 90,000 easily making
it one of the biggest stadiums in the world today.
The Barcelona vs Real Madrid game
is always the hottest ticket in Spanish football and has been
so for a very long time.
They are one of the few club teams
in Europe that refuse to have sponsor logos on their shirts,
however now they have a small logo from a local television station
on their sleeve.
Players that have graced their
hallowed turf included the likes of the Great Johan Cruyff and
Alfredo Di Stefano.
Cruyff came back to the Nou Camp
as a manager and his Dream team won the league title four years
in a row (1990-94) as well as the Champions League title for
the 1992.
Their biggest slap in the face
came when Luis Figo left the Nou Camp to play for Real Madrid.
Up until his transfer to Inter Milan in 2005 he was barracked
by Barca fans every time he came to play at the Nou Camp. There
was even one incident when a so-called fan through a pigs head
onto the playing field.
Between 2000 and 2003, the club
went through a very barren stretch where they did not win a
major trophy. The arrival of a certain Ronaldinho and the leadership
skills of former player Frank Rijkaard swiftly changed the fortunes
of the Catalan Giants bringing the big time back to the Nou
Camp. The 2003/4 season seeing them remarkably finishing in
second place in 'La Liga' after spending the first part of the
season at the foot of the table.
If critics wondered if they could
do better they didn't have to wait too long to have their questions
answered as they won back to back Championships for 2004/5 and
2005/6.
They finished off a tremendous
2005/6 season by dramatically beating Arsenal of England 2-1
in the Champions League Final in Paris scoring two goals in
the last twelve minutes to overturn a 0-1 deficit. In 2009 they
repeated the feat by defeating English Champions Manchester
United to claim their third title.
